Blog 4- Culture!

I apologize for the delay in getting this next blog out. I get so busy and then forget to put one up! I think that is a good problem to have, though. These past 2 weeks have been a little more normal, now that I am settled in. Still lots of fun to be had, but with classes underway, there has been a little less exploring.

WEEK 1:
What better way to share some American culture with your flatmates than by starting off the week by watching "Mean Girls"? Yana, my flatmate from Malta had actually already seen it and had made a joke about the movie last week. Since our other flatmate, Silviia, had not seen it, we decided it was necessary to have a movie night.

Monday we incorporated culture in a different way- through Youtube videos. Have you seen the Youtube video, "How Animals Eat Their Food"? I showed it to them and they loved it!

The week went forward with the usual. I kept busy with classes and on Thursday I went to the hiking club social. Everyone was very nice and I am really looking forward to hiking up to Snowdon on February 28th!

A rather blurry photo from my night:

Saturday was a very busy day! It started off with a run in the rain.

I was completely soaked:

After getting cleaned up and dried off from my run, we went grocery shopping- and actually had a blast! I took a picture of an aisle sign that said "Crumpets" and another sign that said "large baps". I still have to look up what that is, but my best guess is fresh breads. I also bought more cheese (I have not been able to eat enough cheese since arriving. Not sure the reasoning behind the cravings, but no complaints here! This weeks picks were edam and brie cheeses.
Peanuts are called Monkey Nuts:

Large baps? Might mean fresh baked breads?:

Crumpets! Mostly they have Welsh pancakes here:

My favorite drink the past 2 weeks. Options Belgian Hot Chocolate. So Good!
Saturday evening we celebrated my friend Courtney's birthday and everyone had a blast!
The theme was stripes!:

WEEK 2:
Sunday was a lovely day! Silviia, who is from Austria, made us an absolutely delicious apple strudel. It's funny to say I came to Wales for Austrian foods, but I am really excited as this isn't just my first time in Wales, but my first time in Europe. In the evening, I watched the Superbowl and had a great time. Kickoff was at 11:30p.m. local time and the game didn't end until about 3:30a.m.! It was a very late evening, but definitely worth it.

It was delicious!:

A dark photo, but from the Superbowl game with myself on the left, then Thorben, Sophia, and Toby on the right:

Monday I had my British Habitats and Britain in the First World War modules. It was a pretty laid back day after such a long and busy weekend.

Tuesday I enjoyed my second history lecture of the week, then had 2 sessions of German before my day ended. I also managed to get my University of Montana general scholarship completed and cleaned my room up before Wednesday's inspection.

Wednesday was an easy going day. I had my second British Habitats lecture, then was able to not worry about any other classes the rest of the afternoon. I spent Wednesday afternoon downtown at the German Stammtisch (German table/study group) and enjoyed meeting new people and had a wonderful cup of coffee and piece of cheesecake at the coffee shop. Unfortunately, I missed out on a photo opportunity with that cheesecake!
The beautiful coffee shop:

Thursday was a day to sleep in and not worry about anything, too much. I went to my German grammar seminar, met with my Accounting group, then went back to German to finish up classes for the week.

The view from my 1:00 lecture:

Also, I am having fun with the outfits here! The ladies dress in all sorts of different styles, but the noticeable difference is with the men. Majority of them dress much better than those in the U.S.

I am still having the time of my life and really looking forward to what next week brings! I know it will be off to a fun start with Valentine's Day on Sunday!
